080 – Streetcars, Fixtures, Amenities, and a Central City Map –
In most all parts of the city, streetcars and busses are plentiful and located well within walking distance from where-ever
you might live and work. And no, there are no streetcar or bus schedules. From around six in the
morning to eleven thirty at night they run constantly. You'll never have to wait longer than, oh, 10 minutes,
at the most!
Amsterdammertjes – Meant to protect
the public from moving vehicles and to keep cars from parking on narrow canal sidewalks. This one even wears
a hat! Believe us, there are more Amsterdammertjes than there are Amsterdammers.
Crowned Lanterns line the canals and
the streets of central Amsterdam. On the side of buildings and on narrow streets and alleys where regular
street lamps would interfere with pedestrian traffic,
Wall Lanterns provide the needed light.
You got to go? Well, here's one of Amsterdam's famous "
Krul Urinoirs" (curl urinals).
Sorry, they are for men (and boys) only. Women are not welcome! A clear-cut case of sex discrimination
wouldn't you say? Are we wrong, is it really a dog doing its business there or what? Since we are on the
subject of dogs, you are well advised to constantly look where you a treading. To the best of our
knowledge, Amsterdam still has no laws on the books about dog owners having to pick up after their pets! Amsterdam is also
world renowned for its public mural art. Here is one, rather
prosaic example. Here is a more
flamboyant one wouldn't you say? Too bad neither of them
fits in het Rijksmuseum! Here is the "
Central City Map".
And, finally, Dutch fishery and wildlife experts are at a total loss explaining how these two
dolphins
ever got into "het IJselmeer" (the IJsel Lake)!
