074 – Houses – " 't Aepje  (The Little Monkey)" – AD1550 –
One of two remaining all wood houses.

Prior to the devastating, city-wide fires that destroyed over 75% of all the homes and commercial properties in Amsterdam in 1421 and 1452, most all of those structures featured wooden side walls and roofs as well as wooden front and rear walls.  In 1455 a special city government ordinance forbade the building of new, abutting wooden structures.  A 100 years later wooden front and rear walls were "outlawed" as well.  As a result, of these measures, "het Aepje" and "34 Begijnhof" have, to this day, remained the only two structures featuring wooden front and rear walls since 1767.
