053 – Houses – 168 Herengracht – AD1638 –
Designed by Philip Vingboons in classic Dutch style complete with a "halsgevel"
(neck facade) made entirely of sandstone which -in 1638- was so light in color that the house became known as "The White
House". The interior of the house is virtually loaded with beautiful, stucco-relief, wall and ceiling details and scenic,
hand-painted, wallpaper. Here's a view of Philip Vingboons's
original design.
The central hallway leading from the front to the back door is, as you can
see here a virtual museum featuring rich
stucco work, columns made from rare, red marble, and fake doors on its left side. A double-door side entrance leads to an ample
side entrance hall and the stairwell.
The staircase itself is oval in shape all the way
from the first to the top floor. Its walls and ceilings, too, are richly decorated with stucco work and wallpaper paintings.
The first floor
"Drawing Room" has ceiling
pieces done by Jacob de Wit in 1728 and scenic wallpaper paintings done by Isaac de Moucheron in 1720.
