051 – Houses – 40 Herengracht –
This double wide "house" dates back to 1790. From 1808
to 1831 it belonged to the French government after which it was sold to the "Nederlandse Handelsmaatschappy" -a Dutch
corporate giant (still) engaged in international trade- which changed it into the first ofice building ever on any canal in Amsterdam.
In 1996, after the NHM left, its new owners embarked on a restoration process aimed at returning the house to its original residential glory.
As you can tell from the girl sitting on a window sill reading a book, the house has big windows and high ceilings. For a
