051 – Houses – 40 Herengracht –
This double wide "house" dates back to 1790.  From 1808 to 1831 it belonged to the French government after which it was sold to the "Nederlandse Handelsmaatschappy" -a Dutch corporate giant (still) engaged in international trade- which changed it into the first ofice building ever on any canal in Amsterdam.  In 1996, after the NHM left, its new owners embarked on a restoration process aimed at returning the house to its original residential glory.  As you can tell from the girl sitting on a window sill reading a book, the house has big windows and high ceilings.  For a view of the front living room which, as you'll see, is still under renovation, click here.  For views of the wallpaper paintings that decorate the room click on Image 1 Image 2,  and Image 3.
