020 – The "Waterlooplein" Fleamarket –
The Waterlooplein fleamarket had its origin in the 1880s when the area became popularly (and affectionally) known as "de Jodenhoek" (the Jewish corner/quarter).  As such it flourished until 1942-44 when the Nazis began systematically to arrest its jewish inhabitants and cart them off in cattle cars to die in Mauthausen and other such camps.  It wasn't until the mid 1960s that the area started to recover.  Now its is, once again, a flourishing quarter full of life and vitality.  At the end of the square and fully visible from the Blauwbrug stands the "Mozes En Aäron Kerk" (The Moses and Aäron Church) with its beautiful interior.
