The "Growing Garden" – View 1 –

Looking westward toward its two decorative tool sheds and the steps leading to it from "The Ellipse" area.

[32]
The "Growing Garden" – View 2 –

Look along the inside of the grape arbor at its eastern end.

[33}
Herbaceous Border –

Seating area overlooking the length of the herbaceous border.  Quite peaceful, as this (unsuspecting) elderly couple proves.  (No, we didn't wake them!)

[34]
Pebble & Water Garden –View 1–

Overview seen from a balcony-type walkway accessible from the Beech Terrace and "The Ellipse.  This "new" garden dates from the early 1960s prior to which it was a tennis court.

[35]
Pebble & Water Garden –View 2–

Southern view from inside the garden across its beautiful fountains and towards the "Green Garden" and the "Mosaic Mural" gallery which lies just underneath its balustrade area and, in turn, overlooks "The Ornamental Pool.

[36]
Pebble & Water Garden –View 3–

Another shot of the fountains.  The surrounding pebbled area is made from same-sized Mexican stones, laid in the form of a sheaf which carries the Bliss motto, and normally covered under a 6" layer of water!

[37]
The Ornamental Pool – View 1 –

A view from the Green Garden balustrade across the Pebble & Water Garden and its arbored seating area.

[38]
The Ornamental Pool – View 2 –

A closer view.  How about taking a dip?  (That would be a no-no unless you are a garden employee!)

[39]
The Horse Shoe Stairs – View 1 –

leading to the Ornamental Pool from the rear of the residence.

The North Vista – North View –

from the rear of the residence and foreshortened to make it appear longer, a trick employed by Thomas Jefferson in his design at the Univ. of Virginia in Charlottesville.

[42]
The North Vista – South View –

back toward the rear of the residence. Observe how the steps leading down the grassed area are hidden from view in the preceding image!

Leading from the Pebble & Water Garden to "The Ellipse".

An oval area surrounded by a double row of American Hornbeams (Carpinus caroliniana) clipped into the shape of an aerial hedge, and featuring an old, Provencal fountain.
