Home Design, Improvement, Remodeling, or Renovation
– Initial Concept Design Questions –

01.  Without reading or pondering any of the next questions, tell us right now what you have been thinking
       of doing and why?

02.  How many people are there in your family?  What are their sex and ages? Is anyone physically
       disabled in any way?

03.  Since you are unhappy with the house as it is right now, what would you change with the wave of a
magic wand, if you had one?

04.  Is your "beef" with the size of the house, the number of rooms, the size of those rooms, the general
layout, the traffic patterns, with an imbalance in relative sizes and scale, or with its looks?  What?

05.  Rate (on a scale of 1 to 10) your kitchen, your dining room, your living room (do you ever really use
it?), your family room, your den/study, and each of your bedrooms in terms of how well it serves the
needs and the lifestyle of your family.  Which room is your favorite?  Why?  Which do you dislike the
        most?  Why?

06.  Do you do a lot of entertaining?  Family, friends, business associates?  Formal or informal?  Large or
       small affairs?

07.  Is your kitchen easy, hard, or just so-so to work in? Are its work spaces and countertops adequate and
convenient or too small and awkward?  Are the cabinets large enough to suit your needs?  Are they
easy to reach?  Too high or too low?  Does the floor-plan of the kitchen "work"?  Does that floor-plan
relate intelligently to the dining- and the family room?  Do you love to cook and bake?  How important
       is the kitchen to you?

08.  Is yours an "eat-in" kitchen?  If so, how many meals do you and your family enjoy there rather than in the
dining room?  Is the dining room generally used for more formal occasions?  Why?

09.  Is the kitchen light enough or do you have to work and eat in it with the lights on most of the time?

10.  If you have a family room, is it large enough to accommodate everybody?  What about when you have
guests over for dinner or a party?  Is it really the center of family life?  Does it have a fireplace? What
       does it lack?

11.  Have you enough shelf space to hold all of the books that you own or to display all of the knick-knacks,
photos, and trophies that you own?

12.  Do you need a "multi-media" room for your projection TV, your (game?) computer, your music
system, and what not?  With or without a dance floor?  Just kidding!

13.  How about an "in-home" office so that you might be able to work right at home?  Near the front door of
the home (to accommodate business visitors)?  Upstairs?  Or in the basement?  Where and Why?

14.  If your home has a basement, is it finished or just "bare bones"?  Is it more than just a hole in theground
designed to house the furnace, the AC unit, the water heater and whatever else you want to store there?
What use, if any, is made of its space(s)?  Is it large enough?  Is the ceiling high enough?  Is it well lit?  Is
its layout intelligent or do the mechanical systems and the laundry occupy the central area thereby
reducing the size and the usefulness of the surrounding spaces?  What use(s) what you like to make of
       it?

15.  Is the basement easily accessible from the first floor of the home and from the outside world?  Could it, in
your opinion, be re-designed to become an integrated, livable, and pleasant part of the house?  Any
       thoughts on that?

16.  Have you ever thought of creating a basement play room for the kids, a media room, a health spa, or a
self contained "apartment" for an elderly parent, an au-pair, or overnight guests?  Comments?

17.  Are there enough bedrooms in the house or will you need more?  How many and why?  Are the
bedrooms adequate in terms of their sizes?  Are they pleasant to live and sleep in?  Do they offer
sufficient closet space?  What do you like and/or dislike about them?

18.  Does the bedroom area offer enough bathrooms so that no one has to stand in line to wait for his or
her turn?  Are those bathrooms pleasant and well laid out and designed?  Do you like or dislike them?
      Why?

19.  Is the master bedroom a comfortable, pleasant, and –dare we say– a romantic and sexy place where
you don’t mind lingering when you are wide awake and not at all tired, ill, or otherwise "indisposed"?

20.  Aside from "sleeping space", is there –or would you like there to be– additional space(s) to lounge
around, to sit down and talk, to read a book, to make love, to watch TV, to write a letter, or just to be by
yourself away from everybody else in the house?

21.  Would either or both of you like to have your very own space (room) apart from the bedroom that you
share and, certainly, from the rest of the house?

22.  Is the master bath equally comfortable, enjoyable, and romantic?  Do you have, or would you like, double
sinks, a separate shower apart from the one in the tub, more modern or just better looking
"accoutrements" like a new commode, a bidet, more mirrors, vanities, or medicine cabinets? How about
the walls and the flooring?  What do you like and dislike about "your" bathroom?  What?  Why?

23.  In the bedroom area; is there enough closet space for linens ‘n things, towels, toilet articles, and
       whatever have you?

24.  In the master bedroom; do you have enough closet space to hold all of your clothes and shoes or, like
poor Imelda Marcos (remember her?), do you need another closet the size of a hotel room to store them
       all?

25Are the bedrooms noisy or are they well sound-proofed with respect to each other, to the rest of the
house, and to the outside world?

26.  About laundry; where are the washer and dryer located, way down in the basement?  How much of a job
is it to collect dirty clothes and linens and to re-distribute clean ones?  Is a new "system" needed?

27.  Are there enough electrical, cable TV, computer/internet, and phone outlets in all of the bedrooms?  Are
those outlets located in places where they don't dictate your furniture layout?

28.  Does the house offer enough space to store all of your luggage along with all of the things you hardly
ever use but cannot bear to throw away because they are so rich in memories?

29.  Are the heating and air-conditioning systems of the house adequate or substandard in your opinion?
Are they aged and sooner, rather than later, in need of replacement?

30.  Are the windows airtight; do they work adequately to prevent heat gain in the summer and heat loss in
        the winter?

31.  Would you like some additional windows and doors to improve light conditions, visibility, traffic patterns,
       and what have you?

32.  Is your garage adequate for the use(s) to which it is put? Is access to and from the house easy?  Does it
have enough space to store all of your tools, the lawn mower, and that 20’ ladder?  Does it have, or
would you like it to have, a work bench?

33.  Is there enough light in the garage and does it have a back or a side door to the yard/garden?  How
about some windows or another door?

34.  Where do you keep your trash, garbage, and recyclables?  Will you need a roofed or other outdoor
enclosure for their storage and pickup?  Where?  What?  Why?

35.  Do you have, or would you like, a "mud room" or some other place between the garage (or the outdoors)
and the house to take care of muddy/wet shoes and boots?

36.  Do you like the transition from the indoors to the outdoors? Is that transition abrupt or gradual? Do you
       like or dislike it?  Why?

37.  Would you like a sunroom or an "old-fashioned" screened or glassed-in porch?  Or have you been
thinking (dreaming) about some other interior/exterior arrangement such as a multi-purpose Orangery (a
"GardenRoom" cum Family Room) to allow for an indoor garden and to aid the transition from the house
       to the garden?

38.  About the front entrance of your home; is it used constantly or only on "occasions of state"?

39.  Are you happy with the image that the house projects – what it says about YOU?  Do you like its
architectural style?  What would you like to see changed and why?  What attracted you to the house in the
       first place?

40.  Is the home’s façade made of brick or stone, of wood, aluminum, or vinyl siding, or of a combination of
such materials?  Do you like or dislike it?  Why?  What would you rather have?  Why?

41.  Is the roof still OK or is it likely to be in need of some (major) attention soon?  Are there any storage
spaces under the roof?  Are they adequate and easy to get to?  Some improvements needed there?

42.  Getting back to the basement again for just a second; is it dry or have you had problems with
dampness, leaks, or what have you?

43.  About the interior trim work; are the walls (where they meet the ceiling) just "Plain Jane" or are there
(elaborate?) crown moldings?  What about "chair rails" and other architectural embellishments such as
the trim work around the doors and windows?  If "yes", do you like them and would you like to see them
repeated (carried over) in your "new", enlarged, remodeled, or renovated home?  If not, why not?

44.  Do you folks have a romantic streak in you and, thus, do you prefer friendly, warm, cozy and
modernistic, appropriately scaled indoor spaces over brightly lit, relatively open, bare-boned/cold and
austere surroundings of large proportions?  What kind of a home did you grow up in?  Apart from the
memories, what do you miss about that house that you would like to see incorporated?

45Do you incline to the formal or the informal?  Does your home have to conform to today’s tastes or are
you willing and prepared to have something different; to create a home that reflects your taste, your likes
and dislikes, and your ideas of what it should "feel" like and do for YOU?

46.  Whatever else is it that you like or dislike about the home as it stands?  Anything we haven’t touched
upon thus far!  What are you REALLY looking for?  Honestly?  Remember, you are dealing with YOUR
future quality of life here!  Write a book about it, if need be.  We will read and heed it!

47.  Given the "perfect" home, how long are you likely to own and live in it?   If less than 10 years, how
important is its future marketability?  In other words, how important is it that you get your "investment" in it
      back?

48.  If you plan to live in your home for the rest of your life, why not have us (re)design it such that it can be a
"Home For Life" – that you won't have to move out of it should you, as a result of a stroke, a serious heart
attack, or a crippling disease, become disabled to the extent that you will be wheelchair bound?  How?
Simply by making all doors at least 36" and all hallways a minimum of 48" wide – by installing lever type
(European) door handles rather than round (American) door knobs – by constructing the walls around
bathtubs and toilets such that grab-bars can be easily and cheaply installed later should they become
needed – by constructing counter tops and closet shelves such that, again, they can be easily and
cheaply lowered or raised if required – by having all electrical, phone, and cable outlets installed a
minimum 30" above floor level – and by seeing to it that there is a large room with a full bath on the
ground floor that could serve as an "office" or a guest bedroom now and a master bedroom later, etc.
How much extra will all that cost?  Virtually nothing if you do it now while you are in the process of
remodeling the house as it is or of building a brand new one anyway.  A veritable fortune, if you are
forced to do it after disaster has struck!

49.  What kind of a budget have you folks been talking and thinking about?
