Have a "Home For Life"
Based on "Universal Design Principles"...
A "Home for Life" is a home -
● that is designed to be piano and sofa moving as well as wheelchair friendly by
having 3'+ wide doors and 3½' to 4' wide hallways and stairs;
● that has doors offering (European) lever type door-handles rather than round
(American) doorknobs that are difficult to turn for 6 yr olds with tiny hands and
66+yr olds with arthritic ones (and for perfectly healthy, 6' males with their arms
and hands full of grocery bags);
● that offers counter tops and closet shelves that can be readily and inexpensively
lowered or raised should the need arise;
● has wheelchair accessible countertop work spaces, sinks, and (built-in) kitchen
appliances;
● that sports phone, power, and cable plugs and outlets that are at least 30" above
floor level;
● that has an extra bedroom and bath in the basement, or elsewhere in the home,
to accommodate full-time nursing help should you ever require it;
● that offers a first floor "office" or guest bedroom with a bath that has a slip-proof
floor and walls that can be easily and cheaply modified to accommodate hand-
holds, etc, such that, should you ever become disabled, it can become your
master bedroom thereby allowing you to ...
